Gary, we had a 57 President with that air system, the unit in the trunk went nearly all the way across!! It was a huge box, and seems like it had a Studebake/Packard tag on it and possibly a Harrison name also. Mine didn't work, but I remember one in a Packard that blew really cold. Those things were so big that they could have helped winter traction problems-Ha!! Neat looking car by the way, please keep the pics coming! John

Some years back I helped put that factory air in this car. It was made by Novi for Studebaker. Under the hood it has a Sanden compressor and a 134A condenser. The controls under the dash are different from one might think, It has a blower switch for each side, ie one could put one on low and the other side on high. Something to remember is at night the heat load is not as much, so one would turn the blower (s) on low speed. This would make the car colder. With it on low speed, less heat is applied to the coil, hence colder air out the louver ducks, and would freeze the back of you ears. Just ask my brother, he tells a good story.

It's a Novi A/C System. Harrison is GM! [xx(]

Question about Studebaker's factory air conditioning offerings in 1958...

I believe 1958 was the first year Studebaker-Packard offered the (ugly, in my opinion) under the dash box system. I believe it was named the Sutton system.

Therefore, if I specified my new V8 Studebaker to be equipped from the factory with air conditioning, would I have had a choice between the NOVI system or the Sutton sytem, or was the factory only installing the latter, with the NOVI only being a dealer installation if one was actually available?

I've seen a letter from 1955 to the zone managers chastising them and the dealers for estimating a greater number of potential sales of air conditioned cars than what was actually ordered. It seems Studebaker had to commit to NOVI for a certain number of units based on this estimation, and then the orders for air conditioned cars did not come in as expected. So I am sure that in '58, there were still Studebaker specific, NOVI units available.

I have come across quite a few 1958 models with the under-the-dash system. I prefer the NOVI system. It just has a cool 50's look about it.
