View Full Version : What Would You Pay?

What would you pay for a brand new shell for a '53 or '54 C/K? What parts are the most difficult to find/replace in terms of sheet metal?

There are a couple companies producing body shells for cars such as the '69 Camaro, '67 Mustang, '57 Corvette and '57 Bel Air. Why these cars? Popularity and most of the sheet metal (or fiberglass) is available in seperate stampings. As the early C/K is probably the most popular Studebaker ever made, why not start requesting other stampings? Truck floors, fenders, etc. Thoughts?

It would be great if they could do the body shell for the $12,000 they charge for the much more popular Chevy tubs, but I suspect it would cost 10 times that for the smaller volume. Even the front fender tooling done in China would cost way too much for say a 1000 pair run.

Well, the thought is parts first. Maybe fenders, a trunk floor or a hood. I know the cost to tool a complete car from scratch would cost way too much. But you'd have to start somewhere.

Having reproduced a few Studebaker parts, I know the problem is the small potential market. 30 years I paid $5000 for the tooling to do the 63-64 GT Hawk trunk emblems, that's $25 each just for the tooling on the 200 I had made. How many 53-54 hoods could you sell for say $1000 each to help pay for the 50-100K in tooling costs not to mention the rest of the costs.

It's a lot easier to amortize the tooling when there were over 2 million 55-57 Chevy's made. Much tougher with less than 100,000 53 and 54 C/K's made.

Unfortunately, it's not going to happen. The math just doesn't work.

Some trim pieces are hard to find. I need to fix the spears on my rear fenders, as I doubt I'll be able to find any NOS or reproduced ones.

I thought there was someone at York about ten years ago who had a complete C body in fiberglass; or was that just one of those really vivid dreams?
