Dual Brake Pedal ????

I notice every time I have to judge at a car show I see dual and single brake pedals on automatic Studebaker's. When did they start doing this and when did they quite. I saw a 50 Commander with dual pedals and a 52 with a single. Which is right and which is wrong.

Those are the early automatic transmission cars wherein they simply kept the clutch pedal in place and coupled it to the brake pedal with an oversized pad. It still operates one master cylinder.

I knew they had ONE master cylinder. Like I said I have seen them on 1950 and 53s And I am putting one on a 56. But my ??? is HOW COME SOME HAVE IT AND SOME DON'T

If it was a factory application, why would there be a right or a wrong for judging? Furthermore, how could a single pedal ever be considered an incorrect application for an automatic? I'm confused by your questions. Do you mean cars with original purchase orders listing them as having manual transmissions, now only having one pedal?

Was this a dealer option from the factory for standard shift car owners who wanted the new automatics installed, or did they all leave the factory with both for those few years? There has to be a service letter somewhere explaining their use. If it was that common of a practice, it certainly should be in the SDC judging guide.

Remember there were more manual tranny's then auto's in those days so sudebaker left the clutch pedal in place because it was able to set up all cars the same. The wide pedal just tied both the clutch and brake linkage together.

How many years did they do that, Dick? If they were all like that then it sounds like owners or the dealers just pulled out the clutch pedal later? What year did the factory realize it wasn't worth it to include unnecessary pedals?

My 1954 Commander has two shafts one large pedal its an Automatic.

There is nothing confusing about it! All Automatics have a dual shaft Brake pedals from 1950 to 1954, but none beyond that. [:0]

The reason for the "big" pedal is, when you have that "Oh S**T' moment, and use both feet to stop!! <G>
