  • Alternate transmision question?

Is there another transmission that will bolt up to a stock 1950 Commander engine?

Or might there be a kit to hook one up?
Just asking I didn't find any information on this subject.

I guess my real question would be is there a way to make a 50' commander get better gas mileage and current freeway speeds with gearing?

What transmission do you have? An overdrive transmission should deliver about 20 mpg, without that dual carb. manifold setup. (Wasn't that yours?)

In 1956 my 1950 LC got 18.00 mpg on a trip from Toledo to Sarnia Mi, to Niagara Falls, to Albany NY and back to Toledo. It had the 246 engine and 3 spd OD transmission. It also had the 4.54 to 1 rear axle. Perhaps a 4.09 would get better mileage, but below that you are risking lugging the engine. On the other hand, two carbs and dual exhausts might give enough power (using more gas) to get by with a 3.79 rear axle. Its a trade off.
