  • Lost speedster (Re-Post)

I would like to post this again for those that may have missed it when last posted in September.

I am trying to locate a 1955 Studebaker Speedster that was once in my
family. My grandfather bought it in 1957 from the original owner here in Ohio. It was in our family until the early 1980's. My brother moved to Sacramento and had the car shipped to him. His intention was to restore it. When after replacing many parts, he got tired of working on it and didn't want to put the time or efforts into a total restoration and he traded it to someone for a 1965 Mustang. The rest of us in the family were really bummed out about this. It was in very good shape, aside for underside rust from sitting in a damp garage. Beautiful green and yellow color scheme.
I am trying to locate this car to see if I might possibly buy it from the current owner.
Here are the identification numbers I have: VIN: 7162908 Body: 6H-K71134 Engine: P-14064. I looked in the only Studebaker registry I could find but, only found it's close sibling, 1135. A national search of all the BMV's would be really the best, but obviously not practical.
Thanks much for any ideas you might share with me to locate it.

    JMilton,

As promised a long time ago, I went through my list of Speedsters from ebay and craiglist and some car shows but yours was not on it. Sorry I didn't post this earlier, been a bit busy. I also had to go through and catch up with my speedster list.

The list below is a little hard to read because it comes from an excel spreadsheet, but it works.

Also, I should mention that I've had a few SDC calls from your posting asking if mine is the one you are looking for, because I live in Sacramento, CA. But it is not, I have a Lemon/Lime with body# 766 VIN#: 7160052. Bought in San Francisco and lived in the Bay area up until 2000 when I brought it to Sacramento.

I wish you luck and I will continue to look for your car. It's around somewhere. The speedster with the lemon/lime colors just stands out and that keeps them alive and wanted even when they are in bad shape.

I notice my Speedster is not on this list. It is Vin #7807410. The car was originally gry-shasta, but I repainted it black and white so it would have the same color scheme as my first Speedster that I bought back in 1960. Sold that one to my best friend in 1965 and it is in restored condition as my current one is.

        Don, thanks for that information

Between myself and George and John, who are all collecting speedster info, we might have a pretty good list going. We just have to get together and make one big registry list.

J- If you are seriously looking (which it appears you are), I hope you are watching the market. I am constantly amazed at the number of previously-unknown/forgotten rare cars of all makes turn up semi-regularly. I've see GHs, Speedsters, even R-series cars come out of the woodwork. Just this year a real-deal R2 Super Lark emerged, and I know where the twin to it, rough and unrestored but complete, is sitting, unknown by most.

The point is, there is always a chance yours will turn up. If you're serious, watch every day. Here's a good start:

I now have "1134" in my head, and I'll be looking too. Would be a great story if it gets found!

Well this thread got me to thinking. I bought Daisy my 1954Commander from Fred Damson's niece. She has a lemon lime Speedster that is The process of being restored that she got from her Uncle. Her Uncle was from Woodland hills Ca. Maybe its the missing Speedster. I'll try and get ahold of her and find out the Serial number. I don't know where Fred got his Speedster or how long he had it. But I will try and find out some info for you.
