  • Checking gages, etc

I am restoring the dash in my 1964 Lark. I made one good gage cluster out of 3 used units. It contains the fuel, temperature, oil pressure and Amp gages. They are clean and look good but I don't know if they work.

How can I check these items on the bench? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, jeff

Good question. I have tested a fuel gauge on the bench by connecting it to the sender and a battery and moving the sender through its range of motion. I don't have a clue about the other gauges.

I went to a local electronics store years ago and bought a 1000 ohm potentiometer 2 watts. I mounted it in a sheet metal box and soldered 2 wires to it and attached 2 alligator clips. You can use it in place of a sending unit to check the gauges, but you have to know the resistance range in which the gauge operates to know if it is accurate.
