  • Transporting car in pieces. Any suggestions?

I have sold for a buddy a 1952 MG TD on ebay. A resortaion stalled several years ago, but the car is a rolling chassis with all mechanicals restored and installed. Everything else (inlcuding feders, trim, interior bits, etc.) is loose.

The car sold on ebay for a good price over the weekend and the buyer sent an immediate $500 deposit. He asked me if I knew any transportation companies who will ship a car "in bits." We will pack up everything in boxes that we can and then bubble and shrink wrap the fenders, etc., but as we stated in the ebay ad, will will NOT assemble the car for transport.

Anyone here know of a transportation company that will ship a car in pieces?

    THANK YOU!

If he's within a day or so's drive, a rental truck or trailer and pickup should suffice.

If longer than he wishes to drive, I'm outa ideas.

It's a little car. Look into PODS. I think that company, by that name, is all over North America. They drop a shipping container at your door, let you load it, and then transport it to its destination. Container is locked, so it's pretty safe from pilferage, too.

Pods won't knowingly ship a car in their container. If something happens you're on your own and maybe responsible for damage to the container. Won't be any cheaper if you could. $5000 to ship 3 pods from nj to nc.

                I'd say crate it.
Then take it to a freight company, not a specific car shipper.
Contents are car parts. Never mind that some of them are attached to each other.

                  Allen,
I know of a company. My son has used them to transport his two cars from So Cal to Grants Pass, Oregon with good results and fair prices.
Where does the car have to be shipped to?

Send it Greyhound only if you want it lost or damaged, I don't know of any haulers that want it in pieces but a transport co. will take it all if wrapped and then it might get damaged, if the price is right I might take a trip but only a thought.

                        PODS quoted $3295. Too much.

I don't know what the buyer expects to pay, but I think he was thinking about $1500-$2000 tops.

I told him to rent a UHaul 12' cube van and make an adventure out of it. I am sure he could do the whole round trip for less than $2000 including truck rental, hotels and gas.

If you are really interested in making that trip, just let me know and I will pass the information along to the buyer.

Rent the U-Haul one way and fly back.

U-Haul quoted me $1410 for a 14' van,8 days rental and 2,282 miles.Figuring 12 miles per gallon(I'm a optomist)that would be 191 gallons of fuel.Average fuel cost guesstimate @ $2.85 per gallon that means $541.98 in fuel costs.$1951.98 is the total for the truck and fuel.Doesnt leave much of that $2K for hotels or food.A 10' truck rate is $1351.I figured Minneapolis to Long Beach so any variables would cost more.I've been stung by thinking U-Haul was cheap for long distances and just wanted to show the math.
In the past I have had cars similar to this situation loaded into the back of semi's making the haul from CA. to MN. If both parties have contacts with businesses with docks it works well. Most trucking logistic firms can usually find a semi loaded trailer and a operator willing to make the pick up and delivery. It takes a bit to arrange but has worked well for me.
