  • Correct paint/look for 1950 Champ Custom wheels?

    Hi Everyone,

I have a 1950 Champion Custom. It's in very good shape for an original except a previous owner used a paint brush and some awful salmon colored paint on the wheels. I've sand blasted them and am ready to get them back to their original glory. Unfortunately I've yet to find a good image of the appropriate, authentic look. From what was blasted off it looks like all of the wheel was painted black with the front painted Comanche Red (this matches the birth certificate I have for the car). I saw a couple of ivory stripes on them. My questions are:
Should the hubcap clips be painted the front wheel color? Does anyone have an image that I could use as a guide? Everything I've seen has hubcaps covering the wheels. Anyone have any advice or could point me in the right direction? I'm particularly interested in painting the stripes correctly so any advice on that is greatly appreciated!
    thanks in advance

    Hi studebaker21

    Stripes on wheels:

At the 15 minute mark on this Spike.com Muscle Car video they show wheel stripping using a Buegler pin stripping tool:

Television's destination for premium entertainment and storytelling, with original scripted and non-scripted series

You can get the tool a lot of places, e.g.: eBay, amazon, etc. and: http://www.beugler.com/

You can also use pin stripping tape. Some motorcycle suppliers have the such tape already radiused. Google: pin stripping tape wheels

Here's another forum that has a discussion:

      Hi Henry,

Thanks for the links. I have all the tools to add the stripes. What I'm looking for is the specifications: width and placement of the stripes so that they're authentic for the wheel. I know one stripe is wider than the other, I just want to make sure I've got it right. I haven't found any good picts nor have I seen the stripes on any of the few local cars I've seen. So again, any help or images are greatly appreciated.

Here is a sheet that indicates the wheel and strip color for the various body colors for 1950 Champions. The print is a small. Hopefully you can read it. I can take a photo of the stripes of an original wheel, but it won't be today. The clips would be wheel color, but you don't see them.

          Hi Perry,

Thanks for the info and I'm looking forward to seeing the photo. I have the Turning Wheels issue with the specs on the '50 and it's been incredibly helpful. I'm guessing my wheels were untouched except for the unfortunate slapped-on paint on the front. But I want to confirm that the rest of the wheels should remain primer black. Also I've also read that 1-shot ivory paint is close to the Tusk Ivory noted on this spec sheet. Has anyone seen a paint chip of this color? Is the 1-shot a close enough approximation?

          thanks again

Here's a picture of the original spare tire and wheel in my '50 Champion. The four wheels on the car are identical to this one. Hope this helps....
