  • '66 Commander gas tank getting refurbed - update

This humble little car with it's 4-drs, 6 cyl Chevy and 3 speed manual trans is great.[8D] However, the bane of its existence has always been the gas tank. Despite having only 33K actual miles, in 44 years the tank has become a rust and sediment generator. Once again, today, we cleaned out the carb and changed both front and rear gas filters. The rear filter looked like it had sand in it.[:0] We let some gas bleed directly into a bowl and I declare you'd have thought that we were panning for gold the way sediment built up.[}] But now it's safely at the repair shop where the tank will be removed and professionally cleaned and sealed. After that bit of work, I'm hoping she'll be a great little driver for years to come.

Why not just replace it with a new one from the South Bend annex of Studebaker International?

Thanks for all the positive comments. The car had been sitting a good while when I had it brought down South from Indiana in 2008. I paid $1400 for it. The motor runs fine ang the car looks good. We had to do alot of work on the brakes; m/c, w/c, hoses, shoes, lines, etc. And last year it got it's first ever replacement clutch, press, plate and release bearing. But, all in all, not bad expenses to get/keep it rolling. My brother rebuilt the carb and we installed a new fuel pump too. But I knew all along the gas tank had to be redone, and should've taken care of it sooner. My son rountinely uses the car for one of our shops as a pick up, delivery, and go to the PO type vehicle. The car sure gets lot of attention from other drivers.

$1400 for the car and the repair costs to get it drivable and you have a pretty nice car for the investment.

The gas tank is out and on the way to be repaired. I'll be ordering a new gas tank sending unit from SI tomorrow. The steel gas line was in real bad rusty shape and is also being replaced. My mechanic noticed a small radiator leak too. We'll be checking in with the radiator repair shop. I hope it's just something that can be soldered. I'm not sure I want to try to have a 44 year old radiator rotted out. I'm also gonna have the push rod cover gaskets replaced. They seem to be leaking a small quantity of oil. [^]
