I'm in the middle of putting back together my projects frontend ......there is something on Studebakers that has drove me nuts for years and if anyone has the answer it would be good ....I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like an answer.

On the lower A frame there is a hole or eye (what ever you want to call it ) in the cross shaft that holds the A frame to the frame....what was this put there for ??

I've heard two versions:

One guy who claimed to know said it was for pulling the chassis along the assembly line. Supposedly, there was a cable in a track and a hook pulled them along.

Another claimed it was a shipping tiedown point.

I bought a set from Stephen Allen, from a '56 sedan, that had NO hook loops! Apparently these were added in '58, according to what he told me at the time. So if they were for use at the plant, wouldn't they have been a part of the casting from the beginning?

I figured they were tow hook attachment points. But that's just a supposition on my part.

Is that piece bolted to the frame or is it welded to the frame? I had something like that on a '55 Champion four door sedan. It was bolted to the frame. I was told it was a tie down location for shipping and was supposed to have been removed by the dealer.

Conversely, one might infer since you bought a replacement part, there would be no need for it having the assembly line function. Having said this, I doubt greatly Stude had two different parts, but you can see where logic is of little use in this type discussion.

No Joe, this eye is part of the lower control arm inner shaft.

Yes the later models and replacement parts did add the loop or eye in the center of the lower "A" arm shaft casting, it is part of the later casting. I am quite sure it is not for towing, but can be used, not for assembly line use, but a tie-down for boat, truck, train & aircraft shipping, as in EXPORT, also domestic transportation use. [^]
