  • question for Bob Johnstones, I think

    Somewhere in the back of my mind, there was a Studebaker based
    V-8 engine that was built for the Indy 500.. Seems a southern
    gentleman from Atlanta, Ga. was the owner.. The owner had ran cars at Indy.. Who was this wealthy sportsman and what happened to the Stude V-8??

          bill "speedy" smith of speedway motors in lincoln ne. has atleast 3 of those engines on display in his museum they were built and run by the granitelli bros.

            Thank You Bob.. 1 down , 1 to go.. I think the gentleman's name was Lindsey in Atlanta.. An offer (half heartly I'm sure) was made to our hot rod group to help get one of these running right.. THANK YOU THANK YOU!! He also had several collectible classics..

                The Granatellis had nothing to do with that Stude powered Indy car. It was financed and fielded by J. C. Agajanian. The magazine article that featured the cut away drawing was reprinted in Avanti Magazine sometime in the '80's or '90's.

                The engines were advertised in the "80's in Turning Wheels before Bill Smith bought them.
