Flood Damage?

So I'm going thru the Ebay listings and find...this

I see the $2500 starting price and as the pictures come up there is an old owners manual covered with mold. The speedometer looks like is was submerged. The interior looks water damaged as well. I wonder how many old cars from New Orleans will so up in the next few months since most visions of Katrina are starting to fade.

Um, isn't 2.5k a bit high for this car? Yeah, it's got nice seats and the paint is almost decent (at least it's not as surface rusted as mine are). Don't see any cancer... yet. It looks to me to be maybe a 1k car or possibly $500. But what do I know?

With it's being flooded, won't that ruin the instruments? The glove box and climatizer will be toast. After all, they're a type of cardboard. And doesn't flooding damage the engine? Nothing serious, I don't think. Still doesn't that have to be delt with as well? If this car really was damaged in the flooding, there could be a ton of problems...[xx(]

I hope they get their price, but...[?]

The engine would only be damaged if it was running. Wouldn't hard to get it running. But the electrical over time would be a large concern, as would the transmission. I hope that if this was a flood car that they got the 'stink' out.

My '60 Lark is a supposed flood victim of a different sort. As it was told to me by the previous late owner's son, his dad drove the car to work (at one of the old LV casinos) every day. Well, the way it works here in the desert is once it starts to rain, even a little, flash floods can come sweeping down a street out of nowhere, which is exactly what happened one unfortunate day. A torrent of water swept the car either into another lane or into on-coming traffic. Either way, the car was spun around and ended up making considerable contact with another vehicle and the driver's side rear door and rear fender were crunched pretty badly. This happened about ten years ago, give or take, and it'll be one of the first things I tackle once I start tearing her down.

The car has definately had some water damage, I don't know if it is a flood victim or not though, I have seen pictures of cars that were submerged in the flood and they are much rougher, and caked with mud inside and out, If this one was submerged, it has been cleaned up an awful lot.

It seems a bit risky, but if it was cheap enough and you had the space to strip it down totally, it may be OK. Wiring probably needs replacing anyhow in a 47 year old car. Instruments etc could be dismantled and cleaned. Be interesting to watch the listing, maybe he'll have to sell it cheaply?
