The medallion, at least that's what I call it, on the front of the hood on my 1950, just in front of the spear on top of the hood appears fo be brass. Were these painted when the cars were new?
Thanks for any help anyone can give me regarding this matter.

No, above is what it should look like (from the factory). I have one now running on Ebay (buy it now). See:

Can't say for sure - though I'm pretty sure StudeRich can - but they sure look better that way IMHO:

FYI...I had these shields reproduced about 10 years ago and have been selling them since. The only vendor who has purchased any from me is Studebaker International. To my knowledge no other vendors have been selling them.

While the original ones were indeed painted, I have been thinking about what to use when I repaint/restore my 3 50 Commanders. While I have NOS ones that are indeed painted, but as one of the cars is black and I intend on keeping it black, I have been giving thoughts to using one of the brass originals that I buffed up to a shiny brass finish and putting on a coat of clear to keep the brass from tarnishing. I like the look of the shiny brass against the dark color better than the painted one. The one is currently gray and if I keep it gray, I will use a painted one as I like it better laying against a light color. This is a matter of taste I think. If you want a show car then yours should be painted. I might add that if I needed a painted one there is no way I would attempt to paint the colors on myself, much better to buy one of Dick's reproductions.
