Our last post (yesterday) was from the road on our trip to get our new '60 wagon, "LuLu." We got home too late to post last night, so we thought we'd take some time today to share the rest of our journey and the first stage of her clean up.
We got the old girl loaded on the trailer and headed back for home around noon. We couldn't resist stopping to take a picture by these green hills in California...LuLu's going to be a desert dweller now! We always joke that any moisture in these cars always evaporates the second we reach the Arizona border.
We stopped at a great antique shop on the way home to stretch our legs. They had a great garage-themed display, but no Studebakers!
There was no way we could pass Historic Route 66 without a picture. Lo and behold, the seller had loaded LuLu onto the trailer a little too far to the right. It was just as good of a place as any for us to reload her and for John to get to drive her a bit for the first time. If Tracy just so happened to have a camera in her hand at the time...all the better! What a great opportunity!
We arrived home about 12:30 AM and went straight to bed, wondering what our neighbors were going to think when they woke up in the morning to find another Studebaker at our house! (No one has said a word yet...is that good or bad?)
The car contained numerous little treasures...the requisite hair pins, paperclips, match books, loose change, and food wrappers that give us a clue to who used to drive the car. Additionally, the seller had included all of the paperwork gathered on the car since it was originally purchased (old receipts, gas logs, owner's manuals, etc.) As best as we can tell, we are the fourth owners. The second owner was an SDC member as of at least 2002, so we have some people looking into that for us.
This sticker is on the front windshield. It was one we hadn't seen before. We got on eBay today and there is another car for sale with this same decal/sticker in the exact same place on the car!
The only numbers we've found stamped on the engine were these.
Under the hood. We haven't had the chance to clean here yet, but the numbers on the firewall are 60S-P6 241.
The view through the back of the wagon.
The interior after a quick clean-up. (The puddle under the car is from the water it was washed with...so far only a few drips of oil.)
The VIN tag.
The dash after we wiped it down.
John finally has Studebaker with a working radio!!! (This was before we wiped down the dash.)
LuLu after her first bath...she's quite the striking little Studebaker!
Some people have asked whether we're planning on "flipping" the new wagon. Not in a million years!! LuLu's a great addition to our family and we are already looking forward to many more adventures with her!
