what is the deal with that car? It looks like a 37 dictator front clip, but not from the firewall back... Were they building custom bodies for those car? and why does it say the the horsepower is so low?

British car ads from that era quoted "taxable horsepower", which was based upon an arcane formula in which engine bore figured very strongly. You paid an annual license fee based upon this figure, so many British and European cars of the era had engines with tiny bores and a great long stroke.

Paying tax on horsepower! That's an outrage, that's criminal.

That's one of the reasons small cars are popular over the Big Pond. Only wealthy folks can buy them and pay the taxes.

Automobile Quarterly published a photo of one in the Vol. 10, #3 issue of one. If you look in any Studebaker owners guide or shop manual, one will see the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce (N.A.C.C.) road horsepower rating next to the engine displacement.
