  • Found: direct replacement 4 Prestolite alternators

Searching around for a replacement for the Prestolite ALK-5001 alternator on my Lark, I found that Wilson Auto Electric of Winnipeg makes direct, bolt-in replacements for the Prestolite alternators, generators, regulators and even some starters our Studes were equipped with.

Their online catalog lists replacements for sixes and V8s from 1952 to end of production. Check out www.wilsonautoelectric.com .

Sorry if this is already known information, but it's news to me [|)]

The reason that Canada has newly made replacement parts for Studebakers is because Studebakers are still being produced up there in Hamilton Ontario, don't cha know.

Wilson is a rebuilder, IIRC, not a manufacturer. But their stuff is generally good, and I wouldn't hesitate to use it. They have been in the business for many years.

Wish they had a price list, but I'm guessing not cheap.

I have been running a Wilson reman for about three years on a daily driver. Got to love it. Before that I was going through one every 6 months through Napa. The owner of my local Napa told me that he was tired of me hassling over my alt and ordered the Wilson.

I found a rebuilder in Arizona that lists the ALK-5001 replacement for $175. Here's the link.

Not cheap, but if you need one...! I see they also have a 40-amp version in the same case.

I've been using a Nippon Denso from Autozone for about 3 years...looks just like the original and the Wilson unit pictured here....less than $50.00, bolts right in. It failed last fall, I phoned Autozone to order a new unit and they said that my first one was still under warranty and they would get me a replacement...they did...no charge.

Bill, do you have a part number for that ND? How many amps does it generate?

                    Clark, p/n 14540- is the 30 amp....14158- is the 50 amp.
no mods to the wiring...you just need a metric tensioning bolt.

                    it's all here:
