  • High priced 51

This 51 Commander has potential to be a fun car, but the seller would not like what I would offer.

You can never pay too much for a car - but you can buy it years too soon. Did you want this specific car?

Rough puppy for half the price, nothing special there unless you only want a 51 commander 2 door and it is the only one around...

Only if you out live the time it takes it to catch up in value.

Now, if it had the stainless mud guards, that would be worth an extra $500 or so... (!)

I guess this was the point of my original post. Although this is a car that I would like to have, for that starting bid I would expect the car to have an interior, some decent tires, and I would want to see lots of pictures of the floors and other possible rust spots. That less than careful paint job (note the over spray) hints of a car that might hide sloppy repairs underneath.
The car MIGHT be a little jewel, but who would risk that much without a better presentation?

The expression "You can never pay too much for a car..." means that eventually an old car may be worth its purchase price - but as noted above, you may need to live a long time to see that value.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained - why don't you send a note to the seller that you could be interested in this car, but that you feel he is out of range. He'll either: 1) blow you off, 2) reply in an unfriendly way 3) entertain further talks.

If I had paid $2,750.00 for my 52 in 1971 instead of $275.00 it would have been too much. The value of the dollar was higher and the work to earn it longer. Starting with the bottom price he has listed and then really making this car drivable would put the cost out of reason in today's money.
You are right about the offer thing. If I am in his neighborhood and can look at the car I might do that. Lake Village where he is located is about 3 hours from me in the southeast corner of the state. Might be a good road trip.
