That was a great Forum shot and absolutely deserved a TW cover asap. What a beauty, especially when you consider the misadventure after the restoration. Congrats, A & D. [^]

Thank you it was great to come home and see it in the mailbox. What a nice surprise. Boy David was one happy camper. Now you should have seen his face when I showed it to him his chest was all puffed out the phone has just been ringing away. Fantastic way to start the new year.

Indeed, congratulations Anne and David! What a great photo and a great car! I was reminded just how elegant a car painted in an icy blue really looks!

Ditto on the congrats Anne and David. If one didn't know better, you'd think this was fresh from the pages of Saturday Evening Post, circa 1957. Absolutely beautiful!

Congratulations Anne and David. What a beautiful cover!!!

I remember "the man who wears the star" -- actually two of them. Perhaps rockne10 might want to comment on this as Brad and I both grew up in the same town (Washington, PA.) When I was a kid my dad used to buy gasoline at Walt Pettit's Texaco on West Beau Street in downtown Washington. It was a much smaller station than the one in Anne's cover. And no glass front. As I recall it had two service bays, one with a hoist (lift) for oil changes and repairs, and a wash rack.

It was a full service station. Employees pumped gas, checked your oil (without having to ask) and washed your windshield. Walt always wore a Texaco shirt and a bow tie. The station only had one island of pumps, and no canopy. If it was raining you got wet if you got out of your car. This station became a victim of urban renewal probably in the late 60s or early 70s.

The other man was Al Long who had a Texaco station across the street from the high school on Jefferson Avenue. It was full service and was the reverse of Walt's. Al's had the bays on the left side of the building and Walt's were on the right. It too is now gone replaced by a Subway sandwich shop. It also had only one island of pumps. Both of these Texacos sold only automotive products, unlike today's stations with convenience stores inside. They had a pop (soda) machine and maybe a snack machine or cigarette machine.

Both of these men offered quality service for many, many years. One other major difference is that people paid cash for their gas and oil. Like the pumps on the TW cover, theirs didn't have a provision for credit cards or atm cards. Perhaps in later years Al Long may have accepted credit cards (I don't remember.) There was a time when credit cards were placed in a device and an imprint of the card was made by a slide being run over it.(Showing my age here.)

                  Thanks for the memories, Anne.

John, interesting post and good to see you back on the forum. How are you feeling?

About thirty years ago, there was an abandoned Texaco station about four miles south of Greenville, PA on Rt. 18, near where the World War II Army camp, Camp Reynolds, had been located.

A friend of mine had this grand idea that he would like to open the place as a Mexican restaurant, keep the Texaco look and memorabilia, but call the place...."MexAco"! What a concept!

Needless to say, it never happened!

I just found my copy in the mailbox. The picture you posted in the forum does not do the magazine picture justice. It really looks good in print.

                          Bill,
I'm feeling much better. Thanks for asking. "MexAco" sounds like a great concept. Have you ever been to Quaker Steak & Lube in Sharon, PA? There's also one just off the Parkway West near Pgh Airport. It's a wings & more type place in a modern building but with an old time gasoline station theme. I believe the one in Sharon was the original and now they are franchised. They used to sponsor a large Sunday night cruise with parking at the adjacent Sam's Club.
