I purchased a 1955 studebaker commander C coupe and the seller told it was a 259 V8. The serial# 8846400, Motor# VL3665. The second 6 looks it is stamped over a 7 OR the 7 is stamped over the 6. It has a 3 speed on the colunm shift transmission. THe motor has a 4 barrel carb and dual exhausts. Does this car have the proper engine and is it a Bearcat, Passmaster, OR Wildcat? I love this STRONG SOUNDING AND GREAT DRIVING CAR but would like to know "Is this the correct engine for this year of make and WHAT IS IT?" THANK YOU STUDE EXPERTS" for the answer. Bernie K.

VL 3665 would be a '55 Commander 259 from the Los Angles plant...
No such thing as a "Wildcat"
The Bearcat was a 2 barrel 259. The Passmaster was a 4 barrel 259.
To know if it is the motor that was delivered with the car you can order the original production order from the Studebaker National Museum.

The Wildcat appellation was applied to the 4 barrel 259 used in the late 1955 Commanders. It differed from the President's Passmaster 259 only by having 10 less horsepower, I believe due to a slightly lower compression ratio. LH

Merry Christmas, Bob. I'll think of all you California Studebaker savers when I'm flying over you headed for Acapulco. I often envision myself on the costera in my 55 Commander. Maybe someday.....Dave Warren (Perry Mason by day, Perry Como by night)
