    Probably tool crib tokens.

If it wasn't for the last minute i'd never get anything done.

      Yup, tool checks.
When a toolmaker hires in, he is given a ring full of tool checks (usually 10).
He can then go the tool crib and exchange a tool check for the tool that he needs to complete his current job.
When the job is done, he returns the tool for his tool check.
If someone else needs that tool, or if they are taking inventory, or doing periodic verification of tool accuracy - the tool check will tell those in charge who has the tool.
Finally, when a tool maker leaves the company - he better have 10 tool checks on that ring when he hands them back in, or he will be charged for the tool he checked out.

How plentiful are these? Or do I dare ask?

would make a nice addition to the tool box.

When I get a couple of spare minutes, I'll open a box and see what's in it. Getting the spare minutes is the hard part.
