  • '64-'66 Hood ornament. Really dumb question...

A friend of mine gave me a '64-'66 hood ornament,(The ones off the commanders. Has the round lazy S emblum thats see through, all chrome and says "Studebaker" below it), that I am concidering putting on the Lawn-Lark. This is the dumb question, it has two studs on the bottom and all the other hood ornaments I've looked at that arent the same year usually serew on. I've never put on or taken off a '64-'66 before, so how does it secure on with out flying off?[?] I know, I should know this![xx(][]

        It uses two sheetmetal nuts.

        So
        They
        Used
        Delco
        Electronics
        Before
        Autolite
        Kept
        Engines
        Running?

If we are talking about the same thing than the two studs that are molded into the flat part that has Studebaker written into will need what are called speed nuts to retain it to the hood.

Yeah, the bottom. Flashlight photography... Lights went out where I had it stored. Never even heard of a speed nut.[?]

I looked on the Stude-Intl website but the reproductions have threaded studs now, whereas the original type had self-threading nuts. These nuts are stamped into the shape of a flanged hex nut from thin sheet steel. Be careful not to overtighten them as they can't take much torque. A nutdriver works best (screwdriver handle with socket).

Take that with you to your FLAPS, I don't have a hood ornament handy or I'd tell you what size you need. Like it was mentioned, ask for a speed nut, pal nut, or tinnerman nut.
