  • 1937 grill badge repair

I have a few chipped badges for 1937 Dictators which I'd like to try and refurbish. Does anyone know: 1) what is the metal they are made from? 2)can the metal edging and printing be cleaned/made shiny again? 3)is that glass over the face? 4)is there a way of removing the glass without destroying the metal (like heating the works and dropping it into cold water, or some type of solvent or etching process?) 5)if the glass can't be removed, can the chipped areas be cleaned and then built up with nail-polish or something? This is not going to be a 100 point car, so some less than perfect results would be fine.....
    Here is a picture:

    Thanks in advance

    Greg

Somehow the word "cloisonne enamel" came to mind and I found this:

Seems pretty intense process to redo these! Not sure the Stude ball badge was made this way but your picture looks like it might be.

There's a company in Ohio that will refurbish yours for $275 to $300.
Or you can buy a repro for $49 from Chuck Collins at:

If one were big enough, sure would make for a nice brake light on the back of a R-series truck.

While the 'badge' wouldn't work, because it is solid...
If you love that idea, then you should contact Steve Doerschlag in Colorado..

He took the Lazy S script from the cloisonne' and had it cut in chrome vinyl and applied to the glass lenses of his Dictator tail lights on his Coupe Express.
I absolutely adore them, but won't do it to mine in deference to Steve's fine ride.....

Unfortunately, the cloisonne enamel is applied over a solid piece of metal; no light would shine through. Using that design template on a piece of transparent red plastic is an interesting idea. I believe the angles within a tail light lens are designed to refract and reflect the maximum amount of light, much like the Fresnel lens in a lighthouse.

                Thanks Guys,
                The repro looks great!
Maybe I'll take the original, drill a hole in it, and wear it as "Stude bling!"

I have two just like the picture. scratched and needing help. I always thought they would make a great buckle for a belt, then I could wear the Studebaker name proudly.

Like the idea of the taillight lens tho....
