Serial No. 8346809 made in South Bend, the 56,808th Commander in '53

Sales order No. 5080 was written August 11th.

Factory order No. and Line Sequence No. have no meaning to us.

    Date to ship, August 20th.

How to ship, 4AR (some shipping company.)

    Engine No. V 273864 the 66863rd 232 V8 engine in '53

4H C5, Comet, two ways of saying Commander Regal Coupe. Comet was a Telegraph code for verification.

Body No. 13190, the 13190th Commander Coupe body welded up in the weld shop.

    Paint No. Black, self explanatory

Trim, SR Vinyl, Not sure about this, some sort of red vinyl, I'd guess.

Ignition and trunk key nos. self explanatory

Trasmission, OD, Manual with OD, as opposed to plain 3 spd or Auto.

Final Assembly date, August 19, 1953.

    Tires, WSW, White Side Wall

    Climatizer AC, 22342, optional heater

Discs AC, 2314 Full wheel covers

Dir Sign AC, 2351 Turn Signals.

    I think that's all.

        I couldn't think of "Scarlet"

Don't know about Special, Perhaps, dealer order rather than for stock?

[Edit] Destination... Oh, 5 Glasgow Ky. division 5, (that part of the Mid west)

You have the correct designation for the red trim (upholstery), that being Scarlet. It was optional at no extra cost. The "Special" designation in the factory order does not refer to anything special on the car itself as everything thereon was available as standard or optional equipment. It likely refers only to their factory order numbering system.

As to the "4 AR" that refers to the shipper ARCO Auto Carriers of Chicago one of many auto transport companies that worked at delivering Studebaker cars and trucks. The photo above shows the initial shipment out of South Bend (by that company) of the new '46 Skyway Champions during the first week of January 1946.

Don't get your hopes up with those key codes. I bought new keys and none of them work...

I'll try again when I get the lock cylinders out of the door.

Any one know where to get a trailer like the one in the picture from "Studebaker Wheel" ? I think Studebaker should have required Stude tractor from its delivery companies.

Hurwich Iron in South Bend had a bunch of them in their scrap area, but I last saw them in the 1970s. I don't think that I have seen one on the road since then.
