Got my January Goodguys magazine today and on page 69 is a picture of the Ute at the West Coast Nationals with a nice little blurb about the car's history and Dick S's restoration.

Thanks for the heads up, Jeff. I should get my copy soon.

My next project is the first SUV...

Maybe I should take Biggs' advice and put a Stude V8 in it. Then I'd be able to chronicle the build here.

Sweet--but a Stude engine just wouldn't be right. It begs for a vintage hemi with vintage speed parts.

Dick, you could put a Briggs and Stratton in that Wagon and it'd still be cool once you were done with it. [8D]

Thanks barnlark. That's what I told him in another thread. It's just screaming "Woody, Woody".

I know. He even avoided wood in the back of that Kart Hauler. Apparently no patience for whittlin'. :D

Dick... Dick... Dick... you disappoint me [}:)]

Not to take anything away from your honey of a Suburban, but I'm pretty sure this one predates it, and even it probably wasn't the "first:"

It's strange that the "Suburban" name went back and forth between MoPar and GM. I don't think "Daytona" or "Land Cruiser" were reused until Studebaker was out of business.

Thanks for the pic of the Chevy, Keoni. I really didn't know that the industry had an all steel wagon until the '49 Plymouth.

Strictly speaking, the AUTOMOBILE industry didn't... the Chevy and GMC Suburbans were built on truck chassis. The Plymouth (and, I think Dodge, in the same year) was/were the first car-based, all-steel wagons.

Which, Dave and Bob, is part of why this one most likely ain't gonna be woodiefied any time soon ;)

Always thought it'd be a hoot to dig up some origianl-pattern Town & Country-style dynoc to dress up one of these early steel-bodies, though, just to confuse folks at shows [:o)]

Actually, Crosley had an all-steel station wagon before that. I believe it was 1947. When I think of the first Sport Utility Vehicle's, I think of the 4x4 Willy's wagons. :)

Didn't Car Craft do a concept article about making a Ute out of one of these??
