  • Moby Grape's Frame Comes Home!

    After a couple of weeks in the derusting place, I got to bring it home after work. Here is a 'before' and 'after' shot. I also had it galvanized since they didn't charge me a whole lot extra to have it done. Right now, I have it in the house, so I might be able to take a few more detail shots as its standing upright in the front hallway. In spring, I'll paint it in 'chassis black' before putting it all back together.

        It was dipped and galvanized for a cost of $600 including the crossmember.

          230 cubic inch 'Super Skybolt' six. It is a late model; one of the few that had a 3-speed standard transmission behind it. At the first of the model year, the 230 was only available with an automatic.

            That'll be a nice car to drive once she's back together. [8D] 'course, an overdrive transmission would be even better.

                Factory specs:

                194 Six = 120 HP @ 4400 rpm and 177 ft. lbs. torque @ 2400 rpm

                230 six = 140 HP @ 4400 rpm and 220 ft. lbs. torque @ 1600 rpm

                Both = 8.5 to 1 compression ratio

                    Neat, Craig. You could eat off that frame, now.

                        Awsome job.
                        I've oftem thought about hot dipping in zinc,but wondered if the heat might distort the chassis.Did see an Avanti chassis done this way a few years ago and it too looked fine.
                        I guess it works okay???.KILL THOSE RUST DEMONS !
