I have a bare block, and this is the casting numbers, and the books that I have, I cannot find this number in them. I would appreciate the help. #533870-6 and the other set of number on the block #J 9 16. Thanks and I would appreciate your knowledge. Dusty

This is the numbers that are stamped in it. It is 1179448 or II79448. Don't know how they designated their I's or 1's. Dusty

The I's on all Studebaker Serial numbers and Engine numbers are 1's. [:0]

I am not very familiar with 6 Cyl. Engine Numbers, but the SDC Website here: http://www.studebakerdriversclub.com/tech_6data.asp

seems to say: 1955 CAR, 185 cu.in. Champion 6! :)

because it is between these two:
Higher than starting #: 1,138,001 -1955 Champion
Lower than starting #: 1,180,251 -1956 Champion

Dusty,
It's my understanding that #533870 is a 185 casting and the dash 6 would be 1956 but I could be wrong
