  • '54 (Flying Studebaker)

Hi all, saw a nice photo of Mike Pennington's '53 Stude Coupe in the editorial page of an American Rodder magazine. The same piece discussed how Mike purchased a '54 Black sedan that had been altered by Princeton University under a US Government safety program, something about Gyroscopes both front and rear as an early anti collision system. The guy at Princeton said the car disappeared after the project ended and somehow it ended up in the deep south. It's now in a museum (unstated) awaiting restoration.

Those who told Mike where to go said that it "flew" hence the name of this posting.

Anyone heard of this car before [?][?][?] If need be I can go back to the store and provide details on which issue this piece comes from

Also saw a piece about the "New" tailgate step on Ford pickup trucks, but I recalled that Studebaker offered that on the Wagonaire - how quick they forget[)]

I was in a flying 56 Sky Hawk once, the only problem was when in came in for a landing it was upside down! Dislocated the wifes back, put my baby in a full body cast, and gave me a lifelong limp. NT

I believe it is in this museum in Roanoak, VA http://www.vmt.org/

Amen. This is the the third (at least) Studebaker idea that has shown up in the automotive marketplace since Studebaker shut down- Subaru "Hill Holder", GMC Envoy XUV (w/sliding roof), now the tailgate step. I think new Coopers now also have a hill holder-like device. Incidentally, Studebaker sold more sliding roof wagons that GMC did.

Yeah John, I chuckled when I saw that tailgate step crowed about in a TV ad just yesterday! Such innovators! Of course, the introduction of that tailgate step was on the eve of Studebaker's demise - Maybe it's prophetic with regards to Ford as well![:0][B)][xx(]

No deceptive flags to prove I'm patriotic - no biblical BS to impress - just ME and Studebakers - as it should be.

I think this is a different car, but it's the only one that comes to mind:

When we get around to fixin' the current Sky Hawk, let's be sure to keep her close to the ground. I know I wouldn't want to be in the same type accident as my Mama!!
