  • 1957 Fender ??

I got a new fender for my 56 Commander. It is for a Scotsman car. I think #1328249. Tag in side of fender and would you believe it's made in the USA it is the left front. My ?? is there is a semi square plate welded just in side the fender lip to the back with a 1/2 inch hole. What is this for? There is none on the 56 fender.

You may be talking about the fender brace tab, but it was usually just part of the sheet steel fender lip that the fender was made from, that came off of the inside of the wheel opening with a hole for the brace to the body (floor). Maybe Newman & Altman or someone welded it on there to fit more models. [:0]

Keep in mind that the front of the '57 Sedan fender is totally different than a '56 because of a completely different bumper and grille that required many big holes for the wrap-around '57 bumper and side grilles. If you are just using the rear half for a rust-out repair, it may work. [^]

That would certainly be a big waste of a very rare '57 fender though! [}]

The '56 fenders are everywhere, Wisconsin Studebaker has been selling them for 30 years and STILL has some, but no R/H '57's and maybe none at all! [:0]

Thanks StudeRich I am going to weld up all the holes and use the hole fender. I will have to weld in a vent door because there is none there. I hope Classic still sells them.
I am going to put a 57 Packard fender on the other side.

I think I'm gonna need a picture to see what it is you're talking about. I only say this, because after looking at five cars (including a Packard) as well as two used sets, an NOS set, and a nice '56 set for comparison~

        I still do not know what you're talking about... [:0] [V] [B)]

Bummer to hear that '57 fenders were all yopu could find.
Sounds like work. I know of a nice set of '56s~
just down the road from here.

That's actually a '58 fender, that's why there is no vent door cutout.

We know that now. Instead of reading the tite of the thread~
I should'a looked up that part number first.

It would've saved me a bunch of time!!! [B)]

The only difference is right below the head light. I am making a piece to weld in right now. It's tough to do a low level Studebaker. But I really like this wagon.
