  • Location of the Nine factory R3 Avantis

This is what I learned through the forum in 2007 about the locations of the original nine factory R3 Avantis:

    5089 Joliet Ill awaiting restoration

    5237 AOAI member in Ohio

5394 Sold out of NY in 2007, unknown current location

5532 Located in Georgia or NY, may be separated from its engine

5546 Sold in May 2007, unknown current location

    5593 AOAI member in Ohio

5625 sitting in a warehouse in Mich for last 25 years, maybe

5642 Sold at auction about 2004, unknown current location

    5643 Museum in Cleveland

Does anyone care to confirm or correct this information?

My opinion is we only know for sure where four of these Avantis are located. Three more have changed hands recently and the new buyer knows what he has so they are in safe hands. Avanti #5532 and perhaps #5625 are, in my opinion currently unaccounted for.

Is the Number 9 Avanti that the Granatelli's set the Bonneville records with considered among the original R3s? Or perhaps it is THE original R3.

It is in California and was at the Pacific SW Zone meet.

The #9 Avanti is not considered one of the factory installed and original R3's. The original R3's are all '64 model year cars.

The #9 was and is a very, very special and historic Avanti in its own right. It's a Granatelli setup car, not done by the factory.

Didn't a red R3 sell in a Meccum auction this past winter?

John, I think that was Sherwood Egbert's personal car. Not sure if it was a factory "production" R3 or not.

Yes, but not one of the nine production cars, they are the Holy Grail.

Yes...Egbert's car was pulled off the line to be used as the prototype for the changes instituted at R4892. It was a round headlight converted to what became '64 specs. It was not ordered as an R3 as the nine documented cars were.

He'd park in right in front of the administration building for us to drool over. He made the local paper with his way over the limit speeding tickets.

I don't have the list handy but all 9 are accounted for with current owners.

The guy who bought one of those 9 cars and removed the engine for another car should have baals removed and pounded flat.
