I think Stude's 1960 Colonial Red and 1964 Bordeaux Red are two of the best-looking reds ever to grace a car. The very first Studebaker I ever rode in as a kid was my mother's friend's Colonial Red '60 Lark VIII Deluxe 4-door sedan, stick shift. It was rusty then, but when I kidded her husband about it, he said "That Lark will run rings around our Chevy". Their Chevy was an interesting one too...a six-cylinder '64 Chevelle 300 2-door wagon.

Inspiring shot! I have a copy of the postcard with that very image. Got it years ago, for motivation, I guess, since it's so similar to the '59 Regal wagon I have (and have had since the summer of '78). Mine, however, was originally Campfire Red, the color I intend to eventually return it to. The car presently sits in the garage...umm, and the attic, various closets and shelves, and 20 or so miles away from its intended engine, currently in a neighboring state. Alas, the time and funding to further the project are hard to come by, but I do have a bunch of NOS parts and a stubborn (some may say quixotic, even) determination to not give up on it. It was last driven in '86 or '87. If I ever find the time to figure out the procedure I'll share some of the "during" pictures I have of the car (as opposed to "before and after").

I wonder if there would have been any maket for a sports utility vehicle based on a cross between the Champ 4-wheel drive and this 2 door wagon. It sure would have been prettier than the IH Farmall or the Jeep Wagoneer.

Hmmm... Nice car[8D], but I think those fellows would have been better off with a trusty Transtar or a nice Champ! [}]

That would have been neat Doug, but you have to remember that in the '60's there was no market for any privately owned 4 wheel drive! [:0] The only ones that had them were power Companies and a few other utility Co's. and mostly Pickups or 1 or 2 Ton Utility bodied Trucks, and we had no need for SUV's, we had real Station Wagons!

Nobody was dumb enough to drive four hundred pounds of extra almost never needed iron around to go to the local Market to get a half gallon of Milk like SUV drivers do now.

On the off chance there would be a unexpected blizzard you did not shift to 4 wheel drive, you just installed the tire chains!

Aww, you just broke poor midge's heart. Poor thing is so blue sitting there in that dark old garage while this red head is out having fun.

Studerich, you're absolutely right. I tend to think in today's dynamics. Back when that car was built, there were very few families that had two vehicles let alone having one of them be a "fun" car. I still reserve the right to dream.
