  • Reversing hood hinges on a 53

Has anyone "Avantised" a hood on a 53 c or k? If so, what's the setup?

Jerry Forrester has done a few like that. Search for his name on the Forum, he's on here.

Thats one modification that makes alot of sense. No more worry about the hood latch/safety letting go & that monster hood flying up & crushing the front of the roof! I'd long for the ease of reaching over those fenders with such easy access to the engine bay. Temp guage rising on a hot day? No problem-just pop the hood & release some of that hot air from under the hood at speed. Years ago my dad had a 59 Ford wagon with a rear opening hood like that.....so did some 80's Buicks too.

One of the popular donor cars for the neat tilt and drop forward hinges is ~ a mid '80's Buick. LeSabre I think, and I'm pretty sure that is what is on the custom Stude above. I took a complete LeSabre hood and hinge setup home from the local U-Pull, I'm planning on using it on my Street hot rod El Camino.

I think that Tom SBCA used a simple hardware store hinge on Hawk. I thought it was very clever.

an 18" piece of small S/S chain attached to the secondary safety clevis pin on the front of the hood and threaded down thru the hole in the stock hood latch retainer when closing the hood and then attached to the support that connects the lower air deflector to the lower grill surround solves the problem. besides being easier/cheaper than reversing the hood hinges it can be easily eliminated for judging etc.
