View Full Version : Need a new distributor... got one now, thanks!

My mechanical genius friend Kirk came over today and fixed my fuel leak (finally). I don't know quite what he did, but my hard line is now dry as a bone [^]

So we tried to set timing and found it bouncing all over the place. Heavy miss at 2k rpm showed the vacuum advance didn't work; lifted off the cap and found the rotor could be turned by hand about 20 degrees in each direction! Pulled the distributor and opened it up to find metal shavings, an advance weight lying in the bottom, egged-out attaching holes and other rotten-ness.

Kirk says the thing is shot, and I believe him. So, does anyone have a good replacement? I'd maybe like to put in a Delco if I can find it. Or, if you have a suggestion as to which vendor to talk to for a good rebuilt unit... that's welcome too.

(On the good side, we got the carb dialed in and the transmission in gear for the first time since the rebuild!)

Thanks in advance for your help... as always. You guys have saved me so many times :)

Dave Thibeault sells rebuilt distributors, outright or exchange I believe. He also markets the new Mallory although it is a little pricy. Might want to give him a call to see what he can do for you.978 897-3158

Clark, your car was made with the Prestolite distributor which, hearing what is wrong with yours, isnt unusual. Although the Delco isnt correct for the year of your car, it is a more dependable unit & is easy to convert to electronic ignition later if you desire. Not saying the Prestolite cant be converted, but with the Delco, replacement parts are easy to obtain.

Warren, thanks again. Great meeting you and talking! I've already begun getting the parts together for the distributor. (And if you come home one day and the Hawk is missing, you'll know where to look!)

Dean, I look forward to meeting you soon as well!

A problem I ran into when I had the Delco on the Avanti was with the rotor. Don't know what brand it was but the reinforcing ribs on the underside would contact the advance weights and interfere just enough to give an intermittent timing problem. They wouldn't return all the way all the time so I would constantly have to adjust the initial timing. Replacement parts today are just not the same quality as original Delco. Just an FWI.

Clark,

I was moving my compressor to a new location today and found an early Delco stashed behind some boxes. E-mail me if interested.
