  • Factory tach in a 53 Stude Commander

I have been at Sasco for the last few days and unearthed an original dash cluster for, I beleive, a 53 Commander. It has all the gauges but also has a 8k tachometer on the right where maybe a clock would be. It is a mechanical tach. Anybody know anything about such an animal?

I believe they were sold for boats. I think it is just a speedometer without the odometer and a different plexi face.

The question is...where would you get a distributor to drive it?

I did check the number on the tach vs the speedo and they were different #'s. I first thought there were two speedos in it with different face numbers. Would be an interesting addition to a 53 though. Boat sounds possible or maybe export?
But, why would it register to 8000 rpm? Rather optimistic wouldn't you say.

I don't have a part #, I found it in a lonely gondola on the second floor. I don't have a price either as I bought a lot of stuff, too much to itemize

Unless it has four separate pods for the instruments, it's for a '54 Commander. SASCO has had lots of them, mostly painted blue/green.

It does have four sepererate pods. Its painted light blue, V8 above column, white/ivory gauge surrounds.

That's a good question. I've known Dennis for fourty years and I've bought a lot of stuff. I'd say you should call and ask. If you are going, you better make it sooner than later. If you press the dead line at all, you might as well forget it.

I have seen the 54 commander dash offered in old hot rod mag. to be used in early customs, they also had the tack in the add, also I have an old 1974 price folder from Newman- Altman that showed them for sale, just forgot about them until Nels brought it up...Bob

Below the mechanical Tachometer is a kit to install a drive for the Tach, off a generator or any take off shaft which is accessable and is driven by the crankshaft.

And Mark i really like your 66, have any pic's and info on the car? power? auto? stick?and anything else you want to add.

Those tachs used to show up on E-bay every so often. Seems like it was determined that they were for boats.
