It’s no surprise the folks behind the Progressive Automotive X Prize are thrilled by President Obama’s tough new fuel economy standards. After all, they’ve got 136 vehicles racing to build the world’s first mass-produced car capable of triple-digit fuel economy. Some of those cars are, shall we say, unusual. The 100 mpg the X Prize […]

Why not? It will certainly be a memorable relief against a sea of butt ugly "the future is bleak" style designs.

Race car...dynamat floor? - how much heat are they expecting? Or maybe to dampen the sound of a wailing Kuboto biodiesel running through the gears.

With a 2-cylinder Kubota as the prime mover, I doubt that car could maintain much more than about 55 mph at cruise, without draining more juice from the battery than the generator replaces.

It might make 100 mph in a brief burst of speed, then you'd likely have to pull over for half an hour and recharge the batteries. But it might make 100 mpg. That it might do, with what is essentially a lawn tractor engine.

And the Avanti is a heavy car, no question about it. Not the ideal choice for a high-mileage contender.

            It's blasphemy, IMHO.

If an e-Avanti is the goal, the car should be down-sized with a lighter frame. And whatever the approach, it shouldn't be to carve up a piece of automotive history.

The subject E-vanti made me think of the K-vanti.
