If i disconnect the leads , can I charge a 6 volt battery with a 10 amp 12 volt charger from sears? Dumb question caso My stude has a hot soak problem ,and the radiator cap wasn't all the way on. I will go out and try starting it in two hours.I think I might break down and buy a 6 volt battery charger, maybe this auto electrical repair place will have one.Anyone know of a commercial store that sells a 6 volt charger? I drove my stude this morning ,and the speedometer is loud as all get out, and doesn't work . I'm kind of wondering what gears are in my president , it goes slow in what I think is drive .I just called the auto electrical place ,they want $460 some odd dollars. Get out, Does walmart have one? Well I went to walmart and bought a schmacher, It looks like it could be DC also. Alot cheaper than $460. It was a hot soak problem , when I went out to go to walmart ,it turn over ,and I pulled it in the garage!

Yeah - go get that 6V charger before you try to fry that battery! There's 6 - 12volt chargers out there that you can get that'll handle either voltage.[^]

I bought a Schumacher battery maintainer for both 6 & 12 volt batteries at Wal-Mart some months ago. It works like a charm.
I can use it for my Model A, which is 6v & I can use it for my '59 Lark, which is 12 volt.
I think it only cost me about $20.

I have been warned to not use an 8 volt tractor battery with my 6 volt alternator. Not sure why, just know that the fellow who built the alternator knows a lot more about such things than I do.

Eight volt batteries have been commonly used as a "band aid" for starting problems in six volt cars, rather than diagnosing and repairing the real source of the starting problem.
I believe in fixing six volt cars and I do not believe in using eight volt batteries in six volt cars.
My chargers are combination six/12 volt. You just flip a switch. I guess that configuration isn't so common anymore.

Dan, That's Wonderful.
There must be hundreds, nay, thousands, of home remedies for things like that. I remember reading about using a piece of rind from a smoked ham to replace (temporarily) a main bearing in a Model T.
I wonder (new thread? how many quick and dirty (but efficient) fixes there are....

Jimmie,
Have the guy that built you're 6 volt alternator
install an 8 volt regulator. They are available.
If he can't find one, have him search in the fork-
lift section. I've been using 8 volt batteries for
over 3 decades now. Never a problem yet. Just
last year a guy says to me "I don't need an 8 volt.
Watch how easy my truck starts!" He proceeded to
crank and crank and crank. Finally he got it to
fire. Been there, done that too many times!
Use a 6 volt if you want, but I prefer an 8 volt.
Nice to have if you really "drive" a V-8 Studebaker
in the dead of winter.
