  • Toter Motors???

What engines did the 63 Whattoff Toters come with? I've always been under the impression that they were 289's with 5spd OD's. The Whattoff history shows them being model 8E28's but the Studebaker Refernce Guide shows 8E28's as having 259's. Did Whattoff order his Toters on 8E28 chassis with 289 engines??

All Studebaker 8 Cyl. Trucks from 1957 (3E) on, had the option of a 289 Engine, 259's are shown as Standard on all but E40 which came Standard with a 289. Also the H.D. 259 and H.D. 289 were optional.

Many Commercial use 1 Ton and larger Truck fleets, were ordered with H.D. Engines and usually 289 H.D. Engines.

Most reasonable customer requests for "non-available options" were happily filled by the Truck Plant to make a sale. [^]

Example: my '62 Transtar 7E13-131, 1 Ton Dually Cab and Chassis was ordered with the optional deluxe cab W/two-Tone Paint, Hydrovac Brake Booster, Rear Shock Absorbers, Dual wheels with 10,000 GVW suspension, (6) 7.50X16 Tires & Tubes, STD. 289 Engine, 4 Barrel Carb., PCV, Twin Traction 5.13 ratio, Class "A" Turn Signals, Inside Mirror, Dome Light, all STANDARD OPTIONS, BUT the [u]not available</u> 12 inch H.D. Clutch was also ordered and installed. [:0]

1 Minor correction Rich (Yes, I know I am nitpicking here). For the 4E series Deluxe trucks (non-Scotsman), the 289 was the standard V8 engine for all US destined trucks. 259's were used in Scotsmans and export Deluxes only (Although I'm sure if a customer in the US really wanted a 259 they could have special ordered it!).

Yes Mark you are correct for the "real world" applications of the 289 Engine, I was going to mention the strange '59 4E "Studebaker" Trucks, but opt-ted for the Documented (Book) version Engine instead! [:0]

The Parts Books fail to show the use of the 289 Engine as Standard on all '59 V-8 Trucks, but we have found that all of them do have them! [:0]

Yup Rich, and I have a 289 in my '57 1/2 ton which is most definitely not stock as they were only an option in the 1 Ton and over trucks in the 3E series... but we love 'em all anyway! [^]
