Does any know how many 1948 Champion convertibles were produced?

  • #2
1948 was a good year for Studebaker. Production of 1948 Champions was as follows:
    South Bend: 74018
    Los Angeles: 11283
Knocked down and crated for export: 618
    Canada: 2001
    Total: 87,920

I don't think anyone has ever gone through the records to calculate how many of each model were produced, but maybe someone will come forward with that info. It would require going through all 87,920 Champion production orders (if they're available) by hand and noting their body style. That has been done for such limited production models as Avantis and those built with R-series engines, but I don't think it has been done for more common models.

I think that it is noteworthy that 10.1% of Champion production was convertibles. (9.6% of all 1948 model year production was convertibls.)

That is not too bad of an investment on their part. The station wagon was so close to production it even appeared in the Owners Guide. It would be interesting to see what percentage it would have taken for 1948 Champion production had it been built.
