  • AOL maligns Studebaker

How nice of AOL to mention two Studebakers in the list of the 12 worst selling cars. Sure the Avanti had production problems, and yes they do mention car enthusiasts loved it. But somehow they overlooked the fact that the Avanti had probably the longest production run in US car history 1963-2006. They also mention the leaking sliding roof Wagonaires from 1963-66, and claim there were only 940 sold. Wow, I didn't know they were that few in number. I owned TWO of them in the 1970s. I junked one to fix up the other and sold it in 1983. AOL also addresses the AMC AMX and Marlin. I think the 68-70 AMX is a spectacular car.

You know, my mother used to say that one's opinion is a good example of why we wear underwear. There are some things that are best not exposed to the public. My friend George has a book called Lemons of the world or world's worst cars, something like that. He loves the book, I think its a waste of binding and boards. They pan the Avanti too, calling it particularly ugly, however the acknowledge that the styling was at least twenty years ahead of it's time. They also acknowledge that the car's main problem had to do with production issues in it's year of release. They panned the Pinto (a favourite to pick on by anyone) and the Pacer (another favourite victim) as well. These are the same people who call the Lark, "so ugly it's cute." That's the thing about these so-called experts. I'd like to know just what it is that makes them experts in the first place. Many of these people are mis-informed to downright ignorant and love to display it. My wife used to say that one never wants to write down anything that might be used against one, or displays thier stupidity. Advice, these so-called experts would do well to heed.

Just read the basphemy. I have owned four wagonaires and I lived in the Pacific NW where it rains all the time. Never had a problem!!!! This was in the 90's and early 2000's. UGH what do they know!

I even like the Prowler that they mention.

The number they quote for 1963-66 production, is 940. I know for a fact from reading it many times, is that that number is for 1966 production only. I believe there were something like 11,000 Wagonaires sold for the '63 model year alone.

I wouldn't put any Studebaker on a list like that. While I may be partial, I've also seen enough cars that were just plain junk to fill a list like that. It's like the Edsel. Nothing wrong with the car that a different economy at that time wouldn't cure.

              6) 1984 Fiero

              8) Any Cadillac with a 4.5L V8

I agree completely. As to the Edsel; timing was the killer all round. Releasing it during a recession, no training for service staff on a car that had such advanced engineering, etc... Instead of becoming an example of execellent design, it became a by-word for a lemon.

I also have owned three slide-top wagons and one fixed-top. None of them has leaked through the roof. The doors definately! In fact, the floors suffered because of the doors. But no roof problems. I think some of the roof leaks can be traced to improper securing of the slider. I have found that it will leak if it isn't properly aligned and clamped down (up?).

I'm donning my flame suit for what I am about to say.

The article is correct - based strictly on quantity sold. Those other cars mentioned above, like the Pinto were clearly no match for the quality of Studebaker. But, the article wasn't about performance, quality, or dependability. It was about worst sales of an American car. And the sales of the Studebaker Avanti were rather dismal.

While we can state that the Avanti continued for many years after Studebaker, it doesn't figure in that equation either.

Maybe a better article would be quickest failing automobile companies. Then Studebaker could wait out the pretenders like Dodge, GM, and maybe even Ford.
