  • 54 Commander Starter Problem

    Need help!

I pulled my starter due to bendix not engaging. I bench tested the starter and it turned over but the bendix did not engaged. I also tested it with a 12 volt, just to shock it loose. I did spin a little faster, but very quiet.

    Any thoughts?

You might try dissembling the starter, cleaning the bushings and shafts with carb cleaner and lubing them with white (lithium) grease, and reassembling. While its apart, verify that the bushings are not worn, if so replace, or have an automotive electric shop replace them. Mine (53) were so worn the armature was dragging on the coils. Friction slowed it way down.

Might need new brushes if they are too short.
Best to leave "any" lube "off" of the brushes. Dry makes better electrical contact.
Clean and oil on all the bushings.

Just went thru simillar with my 54 Conestoga.
