  • more chevy six into 64 suprises

Today I set the 230 six and powerglide transmission in my 64 cruiser. It appears the Studebaker must have used a different oil pan than the one I have , though I can't imagine a pan more shallow in the front.I will have to check the local junkyard for a different pan. Also the radiator support must be very different for 65 and 66 six cylinder cars because the engine is longer than the v8 engines. Both problems can be solved I suppose , but I sure do wish I could look at 65 or 66 six cylinder car up close and in person. Thanks

The radiator support is indeed different. I don't have a copy of the '65 & '66 parts book for a part number, but I'd bet SASCO has the support.

I went to look in my parts book, but it is already packed up for my move later this week. So then I figured I'd have a look-see at your profile to see where you live, and make a suggestion as to who (if I know someone) in your area you might be able to talk to.
      But I can't do that for you either... [:0] [B)] [V]

Anyone wanna guess where I'm going with this [?] [?] [?]

The pan on the engine I used has plenty of room. The sump is in the rear and everything has plenty of clearance. The engine is from a '66 Stude so I don't know what a "Chevy" pan looks like. I used a whole front clip with radiator saddle from a '66. Come over and have a look.

I know the V-8 used its own pan because Studebaker did not offer duel exhaust for the 65-66 cars the pan is lower and flatter up front for the cross over pipe to clear the steering, but sixes have the exhaust on the right side to start with so never checked for a difference and just got rid of all the sixes any way, been there done that with the V-8's...Bob

Actually , Bob we're talking Chevy sixes here , and Chevy sixes exhaust and intake are on the left side.Since my original post I have looked at a junk six lying on the ground and found the pan to be different from mine. The pan on the junk engine might be what I need. If my car didn't have power steering I probably wouldn't have the clearance , or lack of clearace ,problem.Remind me again, we enjoy this, right? Thanks

Crossover pipe? We don't need no stinkin' crossover pipe to put dual exhausts in a '65-'66 V8 car! Actually, it is true that the crossover pipe can be deleted, then it sounds more like a Studebaker engine. It probably costs a little power. The rest of the '64 and earlier pipes and mufflers fit. I did it in my '65 Wagonaire, which also has a 4-bbl carb, RV grind cam, and 305HO Camaro heads on a 283 block.

I never thought about why Dave Thibeault supplied the parts for my dual exhaust system and got them installed without the crossover. Would it be necessary to swap the oil pan to fit one in? It's been that way for about 12 years.

The radiator support is different, but not alot. I took one from a V8 Stude and modified it to fit. Basically you move the core support to the front of the panels that attach it to the fenders. Then I welded flat irons to the bottom where it attaches to the frame to move it forward some more. The bigger problem is the upper air panel. It is also quite different from the Stude 6 or V8 piece. I do have my home made core support, plus the upper air panel in my stash of parts if you are interested.
