  • WARNING-MAY BE REAL-URGENT-READ ASAP!

    URGENT!!
BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY. READ AND HEED.

I just verified this with Snopes and it is REAL.

    PLEASE INFORM EVERYONE

Emails with pictures of Osama Bin-Laden hanged are being sent and the
moment that you open these emails your computer will crash and you will
not be able to fix it!

If you get an email along the lines of "Osama Bin Laden Captured"

or "Osama Hanged" don't open the attachment.

This e-mail is being distributed through countries around the globe, but
mainly in the US and Israel .

Be considerate & send this warning to whomever you know.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS:

You should be alert during the next days:
Do not open any message with an attached filed called

"Invitation" regardless of who sent it.

It is a virus that opens an Olympic Torch which "burns" the whole hard
    disc C of your computer.

This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in
his/her contact list, that is why you should send this e-mail to all
    your contacts.

It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus
    and open it.

If you receive a mail called "invitation", though sent by a friend, do
not open it and shut down your computer immediately.

This is the worst virus announced by CNN, it has been classified by
Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever.

This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair
yet for this kind of virus.

This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the
    vital information is kept.

SEND THIS E-MAIL TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW

    Take it FWIW.

You've been had. This has been going around for a long time. While the Osama Hanged does carry a trojan, you have to actually open the file to be infected. Just don't open files that come as attachments to your email. Especially zip files.

Also, I doubt you really checked Snopes. If so you'd see that the threat is real but outdated. Not exactly something that's just appeared. Oh, there is a cure too.

I'm suspecting you just passed on something that you received in your email.[}]

Information about the 'Osama Captured/Hanged' computer virus warnings.

Also, if you go to McAfee's page, you'll find this:

    Basically, it says:

    Osama Hanged - Type Hoax

I had a couple friends who are computer savvy that thought it might be real. I should have used quotes to show I just cut-and-pasted it; you're right, I didn't check it- don't even know what "Snopes" is [:I]

My feeling was, I wasn't real worried if it wasn't real... but in case it was, the prevention is so easy...

First thing I thought of was to get this to my Stude peeps! I hope it is a hoax...[B)]

Now for the trivia, where does the name Snopes originate? I suspect Mr. Biggs may know, so I will ask him to hold off on responding.

I wish people would check these things out before posting them. Like I shouldn't have trusted this and I did. Now I've been embarrased by forwarding this to some close friends. I'm going to paste in a friends response to this. Jeannie is in the trade and knows the latest on these things. Like an idiot I didn't check with her first. Here's her response to me:

Well Ron, don't beat yourself up too badly. I'm not doubting anything your friend Jeanne said, but I don't know if it's possible to keep spammers from getting your address and trying to sell you everything from porno to house loans. I get all kinds of that crud and when I look at the address on the spam, they're going down the list alphabetically and I'm somewhere in the middle. Sometimes there's only a letter or two difference between mine and others. I suspect someone has some kind of machine that goes through the alphabet trying every possible email address combination and the ones that aren't returned as undeliverable get sold to spammers. No different than a combination lock, try enough combinations and eventually you'll hit the right one.

Ron, if you're addressing me, I can tell you I don't feel I am in any way wrong by posting this here! Had this been real and able to do the damage it said, I wouldn't want anyone to have to go through that when the only action needed to be safe from it was to know not to open certain e-mails...

I didn't send anyone any "mass spams"- and I am not a computer expert. My ONLY motivation was to try to help those I care for avoid something bad; for that I do not owe, nor will I offer, any apology. You will note that I didn't forward it to any of you, or anyone else- simply posted it on a message board for my friends to read and heed. This is not a "chain" of forwards, and has no "list" of addresses attatched.

Your "friend" is the one that's wrong for not realizing the spirit in which the letter was sent; like me, you probably didn't send it to "clog" anything or give addresses to spammers. You can tell her for me I'm sorry her e-mail address and life were destroyed; that it was my fault all this happened, and you were duped by me; I'm sorry to have caused all the terrible problems, it wasn't intended; I hope her life gets better soon; and maybe cut back on the coffee a little... And if you want you can tell her how to write me through this forum if she gets a thrill out of "embarrassing so badly" well-intentioned folks.

In the future, if I see a way that I might be able to save folks I care about from some possible big problem, I will do it again..... be forewarned!!!!.....[:0]

FYI Robert, the problem I have with these type of emails and/or posts is that someone receives one, then automatically assumes it's the truth. I really had a problem with this statement you made:

I just verified this with Snopes and it is REAL.

If you had verified it on Snopes to be real, then maybe a warning might be useful. But, all I had to do was go to snopes.com, search for Osama virus, and it was right at the top.

My dad used to endlessly forward me things like this until I showed him the snopes website. Now he checks out everything before he sends it on.

Now, where is that Mr. Shaw........
