  • Priceless Rockne; only one extant

1933 Convertible Sedan; the only one known to exist.
If you're in the area of Bergen, Norway, stop and see it.
They tell me the block and head have cracks. I'm shipping them my spare '32 engine.

It's a shame I didn't tell them I had an engine that was in need of a Rockne!

                Hi

Lovely rare car, glad one has survived.

The convertible sedan body is American, was built by Briggs, was shared with Chrysler products of the same years.

That is a very beautiful car. The model terminology confuses me though. Why is that a convertible [u]sedan</u>, not just a convertible?

This one is a convertible 2 dr sedan and were it to be a convertible coupe the roof would not extend all the way from almost 3/4 the length of the rear fenders to the windshield. Some convertible coupes depending on year make and model have both front and rear seating capacity. 56 T-Bird convertible 1 row 2 Seat coupe. 58 T-Bird 2 row 5 seater coupe. This particular Rockne might have started out life as a 2 dr. sedan. I hope this helps. I remember seeing 4 door sedan convertibles also. 1938 Buick. 51 Kaiser, President Kennedy's Lincoln. Hope this helps. jimmijim

This particular car was covered in the July/August 2007 issue of the Antique Studebaker Review.
(You guys should really consider joining!!) It is referred to as a convertible sedan because it had a rear seat (sedan seating). The body was not converted from a sedan or roadster. It was built for Studebaker by the Briggs Body Company of Detroit, Michigan. This particular body style was never used on any other Studebaker. While the 1932-33 Studebakers (President, Commander, Dictator and Six) offered a Convertible Sedan body they were four door models and not two. To distinguish the 4-door convertible sedan from the 2-door most companies referred to the 2-door as a Convertible Victoria (though Studebaker never used this terminology). It was without question the lowest volume body style offered by Rockne 1n 1932-33 (though exact production by body style is not known). Original list was $695.

Thanks for the clarification, but now you've raised another question. In order to avoid hijacking this thread, I will start another, called "whats the difference between a four door convertible sedan and a touring car?". I would appreciate your well-informed input on that question.
