  • Name The Phantom

In the 'Phantom' thread, a lot of attention was given to El Camino type conversions of the Lark. If Studebaker would have made such a truck, what should have been named? I've seen the name Larkamino tagged to that nice '59/'60 Lark conversion, but it's doubtful the boys in South Bend would have named it as such. So lets name it...

    Let's set a couple rules...

    1) El Camino and Ranchero have already been used so these are out

    2) Try not to use something that has already been used, like Dakota or Silverado

    3) It should be manly and truck like.

    4) If you can relate it to a former Studebaker or Packard prototype, bonus points to you.

    5) Prototype names that have gone unused by other car companies are fair game.

    6) Have fun.

At the end we can have a little vote to name the manly beast once and for all .

There was an artist's rendition of an El Camino type Studebaker pickup done by the Studebaker designers that was in a Motor trend magazine around 1957-58. It had Lark like tailights. I think it might have even had a name. I will try to find the magazine, it is packed away in my house somewhere!

I doubt if Studebakers' management in the waning years would have considered using the word 'Coupe Express' in anything....
I can just hear the management meeting when that was brought up.....
"Ok, here's an idea... Let's call it the 'Coupe Express'!"
                "Gufffaww! Hmmmph! Chortle! "Sigh....."
"We tried that once twenty five years ago, and all we sold was 5000 stinking units!"
"Well, that's more than we're selling now"
"Shut up and go get us more coffee"

                Yeah, I can see it

It makes you wonder how they come up with some of the names doesn't it?

On a bird theme, Kestrel, Harrier (both birds of prey) and Sparrow. As far as western towns, there's Scottsdale, Cheyenne and Omaha. The Scottsdale and Cheyenne never got above 'package' level with GM.

Spanish versions of truck (Camion), pick up truck (Camioneta) and horse (Caballo).

Considering the history, I could see calling this an Express, as in a Lark Express. What else does everyone have? This is your chance to be in the Studebaker marketing department .
