Overdrive relay questions

Hi, I have a 55 Speedster with OD. I guess the stupid question of the day is where is this relay, is it the one on the firewall behind the battery? Does anyone have a vendor that can supply a six volt relay or suggest a replacement from another make car that would work?

Those relays are scarce as hen's teeth, especially in 6 volt. Try this:

There was a thread somewhere on the SDC site that told how to rebuild those relays with modern parts I think from Radio Shack?[8D]

i hate to say this but a ford or amc relay is the same part check the ford guys out

I would say that Whacker's suggestion above is the best. It's not that hard to do, as the author laid it out step by step, with photos. Radio Shack sells that relay for $7.00, and the package says the cut-in voltage only needs to be 6v, so it will work on a '55.

Main advantage of doing this is twofold:
1) You'll have a more modern and presumably more reliable relay
2) No one will know! It looks the same on the outside as before!

Well, as I mentioned above, it only takes 6v to switch on the ones sold by Radio Shack. That point is also made in the "How-to" article that Whacker gave us that link to. So, you could say that Radio Shack is also a source for new 6v relays (and only $7.00).

I wouldn't even have brought this up, but when you wrote that the ones from Fifth Avenue Internet Garage have a modern style housing, I see that they may not be that much different. I'm sure they are a great company, not trying to reduce their sales by any means.

By the way, they make a good point on their site that anyone can get brighter headlights by installing relays for their headlights (one for low beam wire, one for hi beam wire). Their Word doc at this address tells how to install them for that purpose and describes the benefits:
