  • R powered? Options?

    Parting out 64V 9599.
Car had R emblems on it and an R1 Powershift, but am curious about other options.
O.K. all you R junkies, anyone give me a rundown on this thing? Body # 64V K6 930.
Unfortunately, the powertrain (and it was NICE)went to a bonehead who will never appreciate it...<sigh>....
Not much left at this point other than rust, but it is still donating bits 'n pieces.

9599 is not on the list. Please double check the serial number.

The JT roster shows that 64V 9599 had engine JTJ323. Are you sure it is an original R1 car?

        Hmmm...must have been a "clone"...
I am at home and can't double check the numbers but believe them to be correct. I was the one who pulled the engine and all looked quite correct and unmolested...
Appears to have disc brakes added over the drum spindles and power steering along with AC.

Can you be more specific about what happened to the engine and transmission?

JT J323 means its a 64 R1 block. 63 and 64 had separate number systems, as I have JTS 1612(63 R2 block) and JTS J330 (64 R2 block). Of course JT and JTS indicate R1 or R2, the letter indicates the month it was cast or stamped, and the number was a datecode(3 means 63 and 23 is the day). So it sounds like as far as the engine:

It appeared on 9/23/63(mine was 9/30/63, and no use of the letter "I" for obvious reasons)
            It was an R1 engine
It was part of the 64 model year

It looks like the R1 block was cast or stamped in the same month as mine and appeared a week earlier.

So I recon it was/is real...
              Thought so...
              Any ideas on options?
As far as who got the engine...a complete AH not known to this forum, but it will at least be going into a Studebaker. I will say, however, that upon teardown the engine was in GREAT shape. I would have done a light overhaul and plugged it in. The tranny was a tad worn, though.

Is that the motor that was/is destined for that certain '39 CE?

BTW George, still got the R1 emblems? I wanna set for the '58.

Or R2 if you have any. [)]

No emblems, Young Captain...long gone...just a couple shiny (sort of) spots left..<G>

George: 64V9599 was indeed a Powershift-transmission 1964 Hawk, but was not Avanti-powered. BP

Oh yes, the Studebaker Avanti(and correct me if I'm wrong on this) had the R and RS moniker in the engine stamping. The Larks, Hawks, and everyone else had the JT and JTS moniker, which signified the Jet Thrust option.

Also JTC. I take it the roster reflected that Hawk's replacement engine [?]

I got the engine number out of the engine section of an older copy of the Jet Thrust Roster, nothing special.

My question is how did Mr. Palma know that it was originally a powershift car? The only logical explanation is that he has a psychic connection to the archives.
