  • After 42+ years, I finally got one

I don't look at Studebaker parts too often on eBay, but today I did. Lo and behold there was a NOS '53 Tri-Star horn button expiring in a little over an hour.
When I got my '53 Starliner in 1966 I bought a bunch of parts directly from the original SASCO (like grille surrounds for $22 each including postage). I ordered a Tri-Star horn button and they sent me a late '53- '55 (plain) button. When I complained, they said they had not had the Tri-Star in a long while and this was the authorized substitute (and they only had two of them left). So, over the years I bought several decent used ones, but never a great one. I kept watch for a NOS one, but never found one. Then several years ago Chuck Lampman put one on eBay. I got outbid at somewhere aroung $200. Chuck told me that it was the only NOS one he had ever seen.
So, I put in a snipe bid on the one listed thinking I'd get outbid for sure. I didn't want someone to steal it, but I had misgivings about spending a lot right now. Even as badly as I wanted one, I couldn't put a ridiculous bid on it. So, I was really surprised when I got the email saying I had won it for just over the bid that was showing when I first saw it on eBay. Must be the economy.

Paul, I saw that early on and thought it odd that no-one was bidding the heck out of it. I had never seen one either, but didn't know it was that rare for you '53 guys. Glad you got it. That's one for the good guys!
I've only won one pair of something I had been in search of for over ten years.. mostly I get outbid. Some things defy common sense price wise when they seem to get into the testosterone stratosphere, so I usually wisely give up. But not always.[B)]

I had a near perfect one for the ute...

I have NEVER seen a NOS one, however. That is quite some find, Paul. I've seen used ones go for that money.

If it's the one I saw, less than $130 but, not much less!

$129.01. It came from the Asa Hall estate. His wife is still selling stuff from his collection.

Yes. I had noticed/envied that immediately when I saw the picture. I wish the used ones I have were that nice.

Well done. Him really pleased for you, it's great when you can end a long search for a part.
