  • Replacing '56 Hawk Glove Box "Keeper"

Any tips for replacing a broken glove box door keeper? This is the small clip with raised flange which engages the door latch. It's fastened with 2 screws to the outside of the roof of the glove box. While the screws are easily removed, the keeper itself resides in an obscure recess which seems just about impossible to reach. Obviously South Bend (or Vernon, CA plant in my case) assembled these things prior to final dash installation.

This thing in my 56J actually broke the evening before my first participation in a car show sometime in the spring of 1969. In a panic, I sealed the glove box door with silicone adhesive. I'd like to do it right this time.

    My own solution:

I taped the replacement keeper to about 8" section of wood paint stirring stick and maneuvered the part into position without much trouble. I was able to easily pull the stick loose and remove it after securing the part with sheet metal screws. Sorry, I should have tried that prior to cluttering the forum.
