Is a 57 Golden Hawk 6 volt or 12 volt?

What is the shift pattern on a 3 speed?

compression braking does not happen [u] Below 30 or so.</u> Above 30 or so (it varies) engine braking is normal.

BTW, there are no "stupid questions", never hesitate to ask any Stude related question here - that's the best way to learn! [^]

Jerry; you want the Standard Group 24 12V Battery, NOT the 24F (Ford). The posts should be arranged so that the small post (-) is forward and the (+) to the REAR when the posts face the Engine. They should be offset, not centered across the Width, so that they are closer to the Engine, than the Fender.

If you have a CSK Corp. Auto Parts Store: Checker, Schucks, Kragen or maybe an O'Reily in your neighborhood, they should have a good Autolite Battery that has a black case and plain flat top that will accept the Studebaker Battery hold down.

That will please our resident Battery Hold Down Inspector, the famous Bob BHDI Palma!

Another good source is the Interstate Battery, unfortunately however it is GREEN!

And also per Tom's post above: "compression braking does not happen Below 30 or so. Above 30 or so (it varies) engine braking is normal."

This means NEVER Park the car in O.D. and in any gear EXCEPT reverse, best to ALWAYS use reverse, then you do not have worry about remembering the O.D. handle. It WILL roll away, if the E brake is not adjusted well and applied, I never trust it alone!

Hey Rich... No problem if you have a green Stude - then the battery matches the paint job! [8)]
