Does anyone know what's so different about the gas cap for a 1966 Studebaker versus all other models? I can't find one for a '66 and my car currently has an oil cap covering the gas tank spout. Thanks!

Welcome, edpjr!
The gas cap would be common to the '64-'66 sedans. It is a non-vented cap, as the tank is vented through a steel tube that runs (inside the trunk) from the filler neck, across the rear panel and down through the left side of the trunk floor. The cap may still be available new from the regular Studebaker vendors. Used ones are very common at the swap meets.
BTW, always check to make sure that the vent tube is not plugged up. A clogged tube can cause fuel delivery problems with symptoms similar to a bad fuel pump.

I've got one. It could stand to have the gasket replaced but it might be okay as is. I think with a bit of polishing it will look good.
$15 shipped. I can send a picture if you wish. Reply to brownsl3@pie.midco.net.

Thanks for the info Brown and Rerun. When I was in high school back in the 1970s, and driving a 59 Lark VIII 2d HT, I worked at an auto parts store. I remembered selling "Stant" caps. When I went to their website, they still listed gas caps for every Stude up through '65. But, for the '66 models they only had oil caps and thermostats listed. Thst's what was confusing me.edp/NC

I have seen two versions of this gas cap. Some have the round metal disk painted the body color of the car, with the cross bar chromed. Others have both parts chromed. I'm not sure of the difference. Maybe the all chrome version was a replacement cap that would work with all body colors without painting.

"OR just maybe...the full Chrome ones were on Daytonas and Cruisers to match the moulding across the rear panel of the car at gas cap level, and the painted ones were on Commanders without the trim"
According to parts book you hit the nail on the head. Commander uses different # from Daytona and Cruiser
Station Wagon uses yet another number.
