What's it take to make a 'Registry'?

I know there's a few guys on here with Registries for a few select cars and trucks. I'm thinking of starting one for '63 Daytona Hardtops and Convertibles.

What's it take, fellas?

The question is what do you want to accompish. Probably you want to find all that are left. Fun to try. You could keep a list on notebook paper. Or at the other end of the spectrum a comprehensive website with tech articles and links.
It doesn't "take" anything more than your time. But it is how you give the information you compile back to the owners, or to the world that make it interesting.
FYI - you can register a domain name and get some space on the web for about 10 bucks year.

I would be interested in taking on a Registry for GT Hawks...

Might be a good idea if a basic format was agreed on, regardless of the year and model the registry covers..

I created a registry for Cruisers. It started like gangbusters and has trickled off a bit. Still I get one or two more cars registered a month. You can see what I've done here. I don't know if you'll ever get anyone to agree on a format, I chose the Excel type format because it's easy to enter and sort:

Also, you'll need to register a domain name and have (or pay) for a place to park the website.

Once someone has done the groundwork to establish a Registry it's success depends upon networking, and interest from owners to respond.

Larry Tholen has done an outstanding job on the Rockne Registry. You may want to ask him.

Running a "Registry" of any type takes determination, soaks up a bunch of your free time in the initial stages, a love of the vehicle you are registering, a free web provider and web page building skills, and a thorough knowledge of the vehicle you are registering. You will also be questioning yourself with "Why did I start this?"

A common descriptive phrase would be "a labor of love".

Depending upon how BIG the registry becomes, there will be no recognition, no money, and very little thanks for all the behind-the-scenes work and effort.


I started the GTS Registry back in 2001 with hopes of finding as many GTSs out there. www.geocities.com/gtsreg/ Of the 15,904 made from 1967-68-69, I now have only 424 registered. Did I mention the frustration behind running a registry as well?? I have since added a number of reference sections, and even we have our own message board. And I have the honor of maintaining it all. It all takes time. Also, be prepared for the heat if folks out there take you to task over some insignificant item , or they call you an outright liar because the [u]facts</u> you have don't jibe with the [u]foggy memory</u> they have. [B)]

Don't get me wrong, it can be fun and a learning experience for all involved. But, it does take maintainence on your part to keep it going. You have to keep the reader's interest and make the registry informative, yet fun. It is a service that you will provide to the Studebaker hobby, and that is the motivation to keep it going and keep it fresh.

Hey that is Great!

I'm just wondering if there is a easier way of doing this similar to registering on the SDC website? I don't have a clue. But there must be some website guru's out there that could help out, having a format for the user to input the information and you moderate it. That would save alot of your time re-inputting the information.

Just thinking.

Yes, I do. The answer is- nothing much. I've got a few other priorities right now.
